British Army - Vehicle Mechanic vs Communications Engineer?
Hi,
I'm just looking for some advice regarding the two jobs choices I've selected for the Army. I need to decide whether to make Vehicle Mechanic or Communications Engineer my top job choice for if I pass selection.
My background in civi street is as a Systems Engineer, and I have A-levels in IT, an Advanced Diploma in Computer Engineering and currently working towards a BSc in Information and Communications Technologies, but one thing I've noticed, is that the further up the IT ladder you climb, the more desk bound you become and the less you work with the physical hardware, hence why I'm torn between this and vehicle mechanic.
On the other hand, it would seem that Communications/Network Engineers would have the better prospects in civi street after my time in the Army, though in all honesty, it's difficult to research this, as I'm not sure what jobs a Vehicle Mechanic could end up doing, other than being a vehicle mechanic.
Any help in deciding, please?
I think that you would be better to consider the Communications role. You are clearly well qualified for it, and the reality is that as one goes up the ladder in most jobs, it is almost inevitable that you are appointed to a larger desk to deal with management and policy, rather than the practical work that you set out to do.
This is simply the reality of the way things happen, but you do not need to become trapped in the system, as with your experience you would always be able to opt out and go for either your own business in your discipline, or make a career move to a preferred field of work.
However you intend to deal with that in the future, should not influence your choice of Army Job selection as it appears that you do not intend to spend your entire working life in the Army. In any case, I rather think that the Army is big enough to allow you to make a change of job to something that you might find more satisfactory when you become more familiar with the social and working environment.
