Many people today still have misguided thoughts and perceptions of a modern Private Investigator or Detective. Some still believe we creep about in dark alleys spying on unsuspecting people. It couldn't't be any further from the truth. Today, a modern Private Investigator will spend many hours leaning over a desk staring at a computer screen, with the constant introduction of social networking sites, databases, and on-line facilities that allow us to trace people purely from their activity whilst on-line the need to don our long trench coats is a thing of the past.
There are still many times when we will have to revert back to the old fashion ways of Private Detective work but the majority of most cases start with opening the lid of the laptop or thumb fighting on the iphone! Only recently I met with a new client in a local pub, I had my laptop and wireless dongle with me and as the client divulged the information he wanted to know I began tapping away at my laptop using the various databases to see if anything came back positive. On this occasion I was fortunate, a trace came back, including a phone number - bonus. Within minutes we had confirmed the subject was residing at the address the database threw at us. As you can imagine the client was impressed.
Sometimes though, this isn't always the case as you can appreciate. Often, we need to put our walking shoes on and spend time out on foot the old fashioned way. Knocking on neighbors doors, following up leads from previous employers, checking at the local Post Offices and so on. As with any investigative work you need a lead to work from, that could be an old address, work colleague, ex-partner, a garage where a car was purchased and so on. Once you have this lead it will most often lead to another and another and so on...
There are times when a blank is drawn, all avenues have been exhausted and there is literally nothing else. We don't always win!
The majority of Private Investigators carry out Process Serving on behalf of solicitors, law firms, courts and even private clients, this is known as their "bread & butter" it pays the bills. Though not always the most glamorous work as more often than not those that we are seeking to serve court papers on would rather not be found it can be interesting. Other times it can be fraught with its own risks. On one occasion I was cornered as I had just finished serving an individual on a rundown estate. My path was blocked by two other men. Fortunately I managed to talk my way out of it and evade a possible confrontation.
Then there are the times of sheer boredom, sat in a vehicle, a building, or even a bush carrying out surveillance that can sometimes last for hours if not days or weeks. But that's another story for another day.
